Hilda in Congress

Congresswoman Hilda Solis in CongressAfter her election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, Hilda quickly established herself in Congress as a powerful voice for change and an effective advocate for progressive values.  Currently serving her fourth term, Hilda is considered to be one of the most active members of the House of Representatives.  She is a tireless policy maker, serving on three of the most powerful committees in Congress.  This unique position allows her to make her mark on a broad range of public policy areas.

Hilda is a member of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, a committee that dominates the policy making process because of its broad jurisdiction, including the environment, health care, and telecommunications.  A highly respected member of the committee, she serves as Vice Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials.  There, she pursues agenda emphasizing environmental justice, working tirelessly to promote policies that protect the vulnerable members of society.

Hilda is also an active member of the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, as well as the Subcommittee on Health.  Her work has gained her widespread recognition as a stalwart defender of net neutrality and an aggressive obstacle to the Bush administration's irresponsible cuts to vital health services for low income individuals, minorities, and children.

Hilda also serves on the Natural Resources Committee.  During the years of the Republican majority, the committee took a leading role in dismantling many of the environmental laws that were passed over the last one hundred years, including the Endangered Species Act.  Now in the majority, Hilda is tirelessly working with her Democratic colleagues to bring back responsible policymaking to the committee to save our national environmental treasures.

A testament to her outstanding work in Congress and her strong record on environmental and energy issues, Hilda was asked by Speaker Pelosi to serve on the exclusive Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.  Hilda has consistently been an outspoken critic of the Bush Administration's coziness with the big oil lobby, as they spent years denying the very existence of global warming.  As a member of the committee, she continues to stand up for the American people by standing up to the many corporations that have had far too much influence on President Bush and his Republican allies in Congress.

Hilda has taken on several leadership roles within the Democratic Caucus.  She is currently the Co-Vice Chair of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.  She also serves as a Senior Whip, as well as a Regional Whip for Southern California.  Hilda is also Chair of the Hispanic Caucus' Task Force on Health and the Environment and former Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues.

Hilda is also playing an active role in the Democratic Party.  She is serving her second term as a member of the DCCC's Recruitment Team, helping to identify strong, credible candidates for the party.  In 2004, she was a member of the Democratic National Committee's Platform Drafting Committee.  In 2005, she served on the Democratic National Committee's Presidential Nomination Timing Commission.

Hilda's extensive accomplishments in Congress are a testament to her hard work and effectiveness as an advocate for working families.
